PUBLIC & CITIZEN JANE Private Americans in the Political Domain The exhibit was sponsored by the SDSU Art Council. All of the exhibits at the SDSU Gallery are jewels that bedeck the San Diego art scene, and this exhibit was particularly compelling and poignant. Tina, with the help of her students transformed the space to incorporate visuals and video representations that illuminate a varied representation of private citizens and how they relate to contemporary American life. It’s fascinating, thought provoking and relevant to all of us.

Thank you letter from past recipient, Mia Hall:
As I am preparing to leave SDSU, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Art Council and its members for all the support they have lent me during these years. Two years ago, I received one of the scholarships and was included in the rotunda exhibition at the Athenaeum. This exhibition led to my being invited back two years later to exhibit in their main gallery in their current exhibition titled “5: San Diego Artists Collaborate on Furniture and Art,” which is so far the highlight of my career. However, the support I have felt over the years have included so much more than the scholarship. You often approach me and ask about my work, comment on it and give me feedback, you have come to my openings and some have purchased work, and several have become good friends. During tough times, I have remembered this support and it infused me with a boost of confidence and energy. I thank you for that.Sincerely,
Mia Hall

Susan Merritt , Professor and Head, Graphic Design Program

To the SDSU Art Council,
Imagine my surprise upon returning from yet another goodwill trip abroad (this time, China—I apologize for the late note) and receiving the good news from Ida that I received a grant from the Art Council’s Faculty Development Fund. This means so much to me, especially the fact that it comes from your group. The Art Council has long been so supportive of the School of Art, Design and Art History. And your enthusiasm and support for my students and furniture design and woodworking program is far reaching.
I am so grateful for the grant-it makes the proposed project all the more exciting and I hope to be able to keep everyone apprised of the development of the work. There is new ground to be broken and I know that many students and faculty in the craft areas are beginning to see the possibilities that will extend the unique qualities of functional objects, paired with video, digital media, and sound. Such finished objects will lend even more substance and depth to the overall diversity of our School. It is my hope that the results of my endeavors will encourage others to follow suit.
You can be certain that you will be the first to be told of the completion of this work, hopefully in time for the Port of San Diego Sculpture Show in October. For updated news on this project, you can go to the website: http://www.sandiegosculptureshow.com/
Thank you again, and I look forward to seeing all of you at the Anne Mudge opening on April 7.
Sincerely, Yours,
Wendy Maruyama
