The State of the Arts at State

Art and design are not luxuries. They are not an afterthought. They are an integral part of our lives. The ability for our students to nourish and employ their finest creativity will be the most important tool they possess as they leave the school and enter the professional world. As artists their job will be to nourish our world, to solve problems in inventive new ways, to design the society that future generations will know.

Here we empower students to change the world, to change our vision of what the world can be.

Here at San Diego State University School of Art, Design and Art History, we are proud of our dedicated faculty and staff who guide this program.  We aim to stimulate our community and inspire our public.

Our integration with our city is made tangible with the opening of the San Diego State Downtown Gallery. The Gallery will be a visible statement of what we have known for decades, that San Diego is a far better place because of all that this University does. Especially in these challenging times when new ideas are essential to our survival, the work of artists must not be separated from the life of the community.

We believe that the free expression of the arts is essential to any society’s growth and transformation and that the Arts help us to have the skills to solve humanity’s most intractable problems.

After three decades, the work of the SDSU Arts Council is as vital to the support of the School of Art, Design, and Art History as ever.  Your support of the Art Council really will have an impact on your community.
